Taking a Soluna Class Using Zoom

If you are new to practicing yoga from home and have not used Zoom before, here are some pointers to get you started.

What is Zoom?

Zoom is a type of computer software that connects your desktop computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone to others without needing email addresses or phone numbers.

How do I begin?

When you sign up for a class, either as a drop in or a registered student, on the Soluna website (https://solunayoga.com/cc-payment/), you will receive an email with an underlined link to the class and a passcode. Click the link, follow the directions to download and install Zoom, which you may be asked to do unless you already have Zoom on your device, and enter your passcode when asked. You must enter the passcode carefully, paying attention to uppercase and lowercase  letters and any characters that may be included. If you have any problem doing this, please call 518-429-1455 or email [email protected] or [email protected] .

How will I see and hear the teacher?

Once the class begins, the teacher will ask everyone to “mute” their devices by selecting a small microphone icon on your screen. It will turn red and show a slash across the microphone icon. At that point, no one can hear you or any background noises in your home, while the teacher will begin speaking and move to the prominent space on the screen. If you cannot hear the teacher, unmute your device by clicking the microphone icon again and ask the teacher to increase the volume. Mute the device again so that class can begin.

Will the class and teacher see me?

You have the option to turn on your video by selecting the video camera icon so that you will be seen. If you do not select it, you will be shielded from view and the icon will be red with a slash through it. It is definitely preferable, however, to click the video icon so that you can be seen and the teacher can interact more successfully with you. When you set your device up in your space, make sure that you can see the teacher easily and the teacher can see you. Putting books or objects underneath and/or behind your device can help obtain the perfect view for all.

When should I arrive for the Zoom class?

Plan to log in 10-15 minutes before class starts to be sure that you are connected before class begins. It’s also nice to have a few minutes to meet the other students in the class or connect with friends.

Like anything new, Zoom may seem strange at first, but hopefully you will find it easier to operate than you thought. Many students have said that they really enjoy practicing yoga this way–no travel time required, you can choose to listen to music or not, and your practice really becomes your own. We hope to see you soon!
